Exploring the Symbiosis of Meditation and Nutrition
Preface
It wasn’t until 2019 that I embarked on a genuine exploration of meditation, marking the onset of my personal “self-improvement” journey. Recognizing the need for internal renovation, I decided to upgrade the software of my mind, realizing that certain habits cultivated over the years were hindering my path to continued success and personal growth. To level up, I understood the necessity of rewiring my brain and fostering new, beneficial behavior patterns for lasting change.
In the pursuit of understanding myself better, I delved into literature on stoicism, spirituality, mental health, and crafting a purpose-driven life. I eagerly consumed one book after another, fueled by the hope that each would bring lasting transformation. However, despite my initial excitement, I found that the energy waned quickly, and the prescribed practices from each book didn’t resonate with me. It felt as though these messages weren’t tailored for my unique journey, compounded by the realization that many contemporary self-help books were repackaging age-old wisdom with slight modifications – the same messages dressed in new attire, urging readers to “follow our program and don’t give up.”
Amidst this exploration, a recurring theme emerged – that of “inner guidance.” It was described as an innate system within us, an ability to seek answers from within rather than externally. This internal guidance, commonly known as intuition, manifested as “hunches,” “gut feelings,” or “impressions.” While navigating through various sources, I discovered that the direct path to consciously accessing intuition lay in the practice of meditation. Meditation, I learned, tunes us into the subtle messages our intuition conveys to our subconscious, with our bodies serving as the conduit for clearer understanding.
Acknowledging the challenges of meditation, I won’t sugarcoat the fact that it took me years and multiple failed attempts to become comfortable with the practice. Our world is bustling and noisy, making it seemingly impossible to tune out distractions. Initially struggling to meditate for more than a minute without losing focus, I often found myself nodding off or “clicking out” – a term used to describe moments during meditation when focus on the session’s purpose is lost. However, with persistent practice, I can now meditate for extended periods effortlessly, experiencing transformative effects. When faced with an unsolvable problem, meditation becomes a tool to quiet my mind and zero in on the issue.
For those skeptical about the validity of intuition, science provides answers. While initially believed to be a product of rapid, automatic processes drawing from accumulated knowledge, recent evidence suggests a different source: our heart and guts. The amygdala and basal ganglia, associated with emotions and pattern recognition, were once thought to be the primary contributors to intuition. However, ongoing research supports the idea that our heart and gut play crucial roles in generating intuitive thoughts and feelings.
In the context of nutrition, the non-diet approach known as “intuitive eating” aligns with the principles of intuitive living. This approach, employed by dietitians to assist clients in developing healthy eating habits, rejects the notion of food restriction. Instead, it emphasizes mindful awareness of hunger and satiety cues, fostering a harmonious relationship with food. Mindful eating allows us to recognize our body’s signals, prompting us to stop eating when satisfied and facilitating proper digestion. This approach not only reduces stress and anxiety related to nourishment but also contributes to a more balanced and intuitive approach to nutrition.
As I continue to delve deeper into the practice of meditation in future blog series, I look forward to providing supporting evidence and insights into the interconnected realms of intuition, mindfulness, and overall well-being.
